Icom IC- T2-H Sport

This radio makes a very serviceable APRS tracker with 1 and 6 watt settings. At one point I thought about attaching the GPS-35 to the shell but decided not to limit my options. If I did it again I would not use the DB-9 but would go the route the Pocket track took or perhaps use a mini din fashioned from one of the molded ends of an PS2 extension cable. The DB-9 has been problematic and requires a velcro strap around it to maintain the connection.

Overview of the tracker built into an empty AA battery shell. The radio comes with one shell and a replacement is ~$18. Having a spare gives the system dual functionality as a simple swap of the battery shell changes configuration from tracker to AA powered 2 meter HT. Keep an antenna handy. With a supply of batteries this is a great way to keep an emergency backup HT handy in the car. Yes, you can use nicads or NIMHs if you want. I just keep 16 alkaline AA's in the car at all times anyway.

Close up of the TT-II, the three big 6 amp diodes drop the voltage to the radio to its preferred ~9-10 volts. Might not be the best setup for portable but works great in the car.
